DIFFERENTIAL

The differential, which is a gearbox positioned on your vehicle's axle allows your vehicle to drive smoothly when you’re making a turn or maneuvering on the road.  It aims the engine power at the wheels, acts as the final gear reduction in the vehicle, slowing the rotational speed of the transmission one final time before it hits the wheels; and permits your left and right tires to rotate at two completely different speeds when you turn your steering wheel. If your differential isn’t functioning properly, you will likely feel and hear it as you’re driving.

You could have a failed differential if:

  1. Vehicle is quickly going through oil.
  2. There is difficulty steering.
  3. A loud front differential noise is heard , such as the grinding of gears, clunking, or a “howling”
  4. Significant or unexplainable wear and tear on your tires.
